Words has spreading around the PS3 community that there will be a region lock PS3 games soon. As we all have known, currently all PS3 games are region-free, which means that we can play Blu-ray disc PS3 games on the PS3 console regardless of the region. To make it more specific to you, here are the list down of PS3 Games Blu-ray disc region:
BLUS – R1 USA
BLES – R2 Europe
BCJP – R2 Japan
BCAS – R3 Asia
BLAU – R4 Australia
Fascinating enough, the news of this region lock PS3 games have been started from the developer of open source PS3 Jailbreak exploit code, Mathieulh. He has mentioned that the idea of region lock PS3 games have been discreetly implemented in the 3.30 firmware by Sony but cannot be used by the PS3 games developers. With the introduction of SDK 3.50, the publishers can opt to choose whether to region lock their games or not. But, don’t worry, Mathieulh has tweeted an interesting idea to “bypass” it:
With their kernel and vsh now exposed though it becomes possible for reverse engineers to stumble to hidden “features” such as this one.
There is also another screenshot from Mathieulh’s PS3 to prove that Sony has actually implemented region-lock since the release of 3.30 firmware.
To make this clear, those screenshots did come from my ps3, no it’s not Netflix. the region lock is defined in the discs’ param.sfo.
